A lot of beginners worry about how often to water, this is really common.

Do you know what type of orchid it is? (Phalaenopsis, the Moth Orchid, is the most common type.)

My mom has 2 orchids and they prefer the east facing windowed room they are in now since they didn't begin to grow new runners until they were placed there. The directions on her flower sheet in the first orchid she received said to give the plant 4 ice cubes once weekly, and to try to place them so they were not on the orchid's leaves. Hope this helps.

OK, it sounds like the plant is a Phalaenopsis, since those are the only ones I'v seen sold with the "ice cube" recommendation.

Rather than use ice cubes, my recommendation is simpler: just as the plant approaches dryness, take it to the sink and run water through the pot, trying to get all the potting mix wet. (Water will run out the bottom.) They don't want to dry out completely, and they also don't want to stay totally wet all the time, so water just as the plant is about to dry out. Depending on the size of the pot, humidity, temperature, etc. that will most likely mean about once a week, though it might be more or less often; the important thing is that the plant be just approaching dryness when you water.
