cut off roots

my orchid was beautiful..it is in the clear plastic pot(3-4"), I balanced it in a square glass container and it had wonderful light and air. it was like suspended above the bottom of the square container so there was good drainage. I purchased a larger pot to put it in to hide the roots and it started to fade. flowers fell off and the top roots browned. so..i took it out of it's container and cut the entire pack of roots off at the base of the leaves leaving 1/2" of the base. the roots were bad. I put it back into the same container with 1/2" medium, then the plant and then refilled the rest of the medium around the plant. I think it may not make it because this was brutal, but there is one or 2 other roots. what do you think? did I kill the orchid? thank you

the leaves are still rich dark green. and oh, I also cut down the flower stems to the first node by the leaves.?

Roots that had turned brown and were soft and mushy were dead. The plant won't miss them. (If they were still firm, that would be a lot more stressful.)

If the plant still has a couple of roots, it has a decent chance of recovering. Sometimes orchids bounce back quickly, other times they can limp along for years before they recover (if they ever do). I have limited patience, so if a plant doesn't recover within a year or two -- or if it continues to decline -- I usually swap it out for another one.

Best wishes for your orchid!

YOUR COMMENT CABLE WAS SO NICE AND RELIEVED MY ISSUE OF BAD PLANT CARE. I ALSO SAY BYE-BYE TO PLANTS IF THEY DO NOT BEHAVE IN A REASONABLE TIME AND MANNER. THANKS

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, MY ORCHID HAS A NEW BUD ON ONE OF THE ROOTS (YES,ROOT) AND A NEW LEAF HAS APPEARED. LOOKS VERY HEALTHY, SO MY CRITICAL CUTTING OF THE ROOTS WAS OK. I ALSO WATER IT FULLY UNDER THE FAUCET, ONCE A WK. AND ONCE IN BETWEEN WITH LESS WATER, ABOUT 3/4 CUP. I HAVE BALALNCE THE LEAVES UPWARD WITH THIN WOOD STICKS AND THEY SEEM TO LOVE THIS INSTEAD OF DROOPING. YEA!

my orchid now has 7 flower buds/blossoms on the new shoot. it is thriving and I cannot wait to see the flowers bloom. received plant as a gift in oct. of 2013,totally cut off all roots, scared myself! returned to the same soil and watched it grow new leaves and now a new shoot with very healthy looking flower buds, at least 7,awesome. watered every 4 days with the faucet and drenched it till it ran out of the bottom...I guess we have conformed to eachothers efforts. so sweet, since I have heard so many complaints. persistence and proper care do count.

so sweet NEW
by: nnnn

well, I had 7 blossoms from dec.-feb. 2015 not 4 months of blooming again but they were beautiful.
I was hoping for them to bloom longer but I know I need to repot my orchid. I have so much enjoyed watching the growth process of this awesome plant and now will repot it and again wait for the beauty of it to consume my watchful eye. I wish I could upload pics.
